the bag, 2026 edition
Compared to last year the bag is heavier by exactly one microphone, which is the entire story of 2026 so far. In order out of the top pocket:
- Tascam DR-05X
- the beater. lives in the bag whether invited or not.
- Zoom H1n
- second body, mostly for room tone and as insurance.
- Rode NT-SF1
- the new one. i am still scared of it.
- AAs
- taped in pairs so a loose pair can't jingle. this single habit improved my recordings more than any microphone purchase.
- notebook
- mostly timestamps, occasionally a word like "metallic-6am" that took me two tries to decode.
- windscreen ×2
- one per recorder. the foam originals went to the rail-yard bridge, which eats foam.
What stays home is the tripod, which has never once been what the situation asked for. What comes to every session, though it's not a recording tool, is the thermos. Four a.m. is a long time to stand somewhere without anything warm.
